Steven is a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey at the Alaska Science Center, Anchorage. He has been studying polar bears since 1980.
Dr. Amstrup is particularly interested in how science can help to reconcile the ever enlarging human footprint on our environment with the needs of other species. He led the team which prepared reports that became the basis for the May 14, 2008 decision to list polar bears as a Threatened Species under the Endangered Species Act.
In addition to Dr. Amstrup’s lecture, the evening includes:
- Update from Director Jeffrey Swanagan on plans for Polar Frontiers – a multi-species exhibit scheduled to open in 2009
- Representatives from the Byrd Polar Research Center at OSU who will answer your questions about global climate change
- Raffle of selected polar bear books, photographs, and giant plush polar bears

The lecture will take place at the Ohio State University Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, Ohio.
